After our discussion with the tutors about moving away from Alice and looking into perhaps a darker theme, I decided to go back to my personal philosophy to see what I could take from there. I really want this project to be about me and a good representation of my inspirations, loves and fears to create something that I can personally relate to and hopefully encourage others to do the same.
I've always liked reading and I think its the stories with the twists and the slightly bizarre that have always held my imagination. I've always loved the Brothers Gimm fairy tales, they seem to always have a darker meaning behind them.
The lady bird books inspired me so much. Cinderella being my favourite from the selection, I loved the outfits and the fact that in this story she went to the ball three times which meant three different ball gowns beautifully illustrated!
On the Cinderella theme, my favourite film was the Slipper and the Rose. Again it was the costumes that held my interest. My favourite authors are Oscar Wilde who is famous for the story of The Happy Prince and Beatrix Potter (my favourite story was the Tailor of Gloucester, I loved how the mice managed to make such a beautiful garment).
I constantly re-read the Narnia sequence and stories which had enchantment, magic and fantasy within.
Some characters have always stood out to me such as Miss Havisham from Great Expectations.
Looking into nursery rhymes could also be a good direction, looking into the meaning of them. For example ring of roses was referring to the black death.
I think for this project I want to explore historical references. I love costume but need to find a way to develop this and perhaps modernise it. One of my previous projects was on the 18th Century combined with the 80's, I loved this project as it brought together my love of theatrical sets similar to those of Tim Walker. However I think to move forward I need to see how this can be done differently and perhaps to a live project.
